Inclusion in Hockey

Our Purpose

At Alaska Pride Hockey Association, inclusion means creating a hockey community where LGBTQIA+ people, allies, and players of all backgrounds and skill levels feel welcomed, respected, supported, and empowered to participate.

We believe inclusion is more than simply making room for everyone—it is an active commitment shared by all of us. Every player, coach, volunteer, official, and supporter has a role in helping create a hockey environment where people can be themselves, build connections, and enjoy the game without fear of discrimination or exclusion.

What Does Inclusion Look Like in Hockey?

  • Centering Community Voices – Listen to and value the experiences, perspectives, and needs of LGBTQIA+ players and others who have historically been underrepresented in hockey. Create opportunities for those voices to shape our programs, events, and community.

  • Building Community Beyond the Rink – Inclusion doesn't stop when the skate ends. Foster genuine friendships, connections, and a sense of belonging through conversations, social gatherings, encouragement, and shared experiences both on and off the ice.

  • Making Space for Different Experiences – Recognize that everyone experiences hockey differently. Be mindful that a person's identity, background, experience level, or circumstances may shape how they experience the sport, and approach those differences with curiosity, empathy, and respect.

  • Listen, Learn & Grow – Be open to feedback and willing to learn. When something doesn't land as intended, focus on its impact rather than becoming defensive about intent. We all have an opportunity to grow and help make hockey better for the people around us.

  • Playing with Respect – Hockey is a competitive sport, but competition should never come at the expense of safety or respect. Play hard, play fair, and be mindful of the people sharing the ice with you. Intimidation, harassment, excessive aggression, or behavior intended to discourage someone from participating has no place in our hockey community.

  • Being an Advocate On and Off the Ice – Stand up against homophobia, transphobia, racism, sexism, ableism, and all other forms of discrimination, harassment, and hate. If you see or hear something that conflicts with our values, don't ignore it. Speak up, support those affected, or report the concern to someone who can help.

Everyone Has a Role

Alaska Pride Hockey Association welcomes LGBTQIA+ players, allies, and anyone who believes in a more inclusive hockey community. By participating in our programs and events, we ask everyone to help uphold these values and contribute to an environment where people feel safe, respected, and able to be themselves.
